[05.02] Jason Amm's music immediately delights with its honesty, clarity, and emotional resonance. Made using the classic sounds of the Roland TR-808, Jupiter 6, and other anologue antiques, his work stands out in a world dominated by artists jumping on the latest technological fads. The songs are consistent and minimal, drawing attention away from technological gee-wiz and more to the subtle differences in melody and rhythm.
Amm resides in Toronto, where he runs Suction Records with Gregory Dr
Rocher (who goes by the artist name Lowfish). Suction has released several
Solvent and Lowfish records, as well as a two-volume CD set called Snow
Robots, that included such electro luminaries as Adult and G.D. Luxxe.
In 2001, Amm continued his onslaught of pop-infused electronic music with
his third full-length, Solvent City, this time for the esteemed
German label Morr Music.
Amm has a deep appreciation for the electronic music that defined the 1980s. He strives to capture the charming, sincere side of the era, when melodic—and often imperfect—electronics colored catchy pop songs. Solvent records are filled with irrestible pop melodies that bounce and tickle. But don't think you are getting another trendy, one-listen-wonder electro record. Although Amm's style is consistently retro, there is something unmistakingly refreshing and satisfying about his compositions. He widdles down pop-electro to its core, leaving only the essentials. There is simply nothing not to like—the melodies are pure, the beats clear and concise. Thank you Mr. Amm for somehow making the tired sound of electro once again enjoyable. —Nyles
